Over nine-hundred students are attending the 2013 edition of the Annual Children Against Poverty or CAP programme, organized by the Ministry of Social Development.
The Ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Education and the Central Planning Division in the Ministry of Finance to conduct the vacation component of the Programme this year.
The sessions are being held from July 15th to 31st, targeting grades 2 – 5 students from economically challenged households, who are low academic achievers or have behavioural problems.
The programme is providing remedial and other activities such as Art & Craft, Social Skills, Sports and sessions on critical life skills. A release from the Ministry of Social Development says this year marks the final vacation component in its present format, as the CAP programme will transition to an After-School programme.
During the month of August, the Ministry of Social Development will collaborate with the Ministry of Education and other key stakeholders to finalize plans for the After-School component of the CAP programme, which will be carried out at several primary schools across the country from September this year.
This programme is designed to enhance the literacy and numeracy skills of specially selected students. Also from September this year, the Parenting Education component of the programme will commence, providing training in proper parenting techniques and other skills to the parents of the children selected for the After-School programme.
Sessions are being held at eighteen Centres across the country.
