The Ministry of National Mobilisation, Social Development, The Family, Gender Affairs, Youth, Housing and Informal Human Settlement (MoNM), in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), conducted the Family Life Education (FLE) Training.
The FLE training initiative aimed to assist 395 vulnerable families located in Saint Vincent's Green Zone, which encompasses areas from Central Leeward to South Central Windward. The program was divided into two cohorts. Starting on May 3, 2023, the first cohort engaged 182 families from May to June, taking place in various locations including Barrouallie, Redemption Sharps, and Stubbs. Additionally, another 213 families participated in the second cohort from August to September, covering areas such as Campden Park, Stubbs, and Calliaqua.
The training empowered families to be more independent, develop economic activities and strengthen family life and relations. Participants received monthly support grants of XCD $600 to cover immediate family expenses and basic needs. The training curriculum covered a wide range of topics, including attitude, motivation, responsibility, anger management, conflict resolution, stress reduction, verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as money and time management.
The FLE Training is a component of the WE CAN Project, led by MoNM. The WE CAN Project provides comprehensive support to vulnerable families as well as farming communities, aiming to improve their living standards. While the FLE Training primarily focused on life skills development, most participants will transition to the Farm Skills Internship, another programme within the WE CAN Project. Currently, the World Food Programme is providing funding for human resources and administrative-related expenses, and efforts are underway to secure additional resources for procuring livelihood inputs with the intention of expanding the project's scope.
Through the generous support of the Joint SDG Fund, WFP facilitated key resources towards the success of the project.
