Hon. Orando Brewster

The Ministry of National Mobilisation in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will be hosting a four (4) day regional training workshop from December 12th to 15th, 2017 for Community Development practitioners.

In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the mechanisms presently used to facilitate community engagement needs to be strengthened. A systematic approach to community engagement is critical for effective community development. This is necessary to ensure that the key players within communities are identified and engaged to articulate community vision and priority issues affecting communities.

To this end, the Ministry of National Mobilisation will be hosting a four (4) day regional training workshop from December 12th to 15th 2017 for development practitioners. This training is being funded by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) through the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF). The workshop is entitled ‘Effective Community Engagement and Integrated Community Development’. It will involve a combination of theoretical and practical exercises aimed at broadening participants’ knowledge on effective community engagement techniques and provide information on how improving this skill-set will help to increase community participation and by extension sustainable development within the communities. On December 12th, 13th and 15th, sessions will be held at the Blue Lagoon Hotel and Marina, Ratho Mill, commencing at 8:30 a.m. daily. On Thursday December 14th there will be a field trip to North Leeward where meetings will be held with residents of Rose Hall and Fitz Hughes.

Participants would be drawn from Grenada, St. Lucia, Dominica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, while the facilitators would be from the Social Development Commission of Jamaica with the lead facilitator Executive Director Dr. Richardo Akien and from the Caribbean Development Bank.  The four day workshop is expected to have an opening ceremony and would be hosted by the Honourable Ministers Frederick Stephenson, who has responsibility for Community Development, and Saboto Caesar, who has responsibility for the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF).  In this vein the Ministry is extending a cordial invitation to the media to cover the proceedings of the opening ceremony and the workshop.  Further details of the training can be had from Supervisor of the Community Development Division at 4561111 ext 501.
