Parents across the nation are being warned that child abandonment is a crime and persons can be charged with this offence.
The point was made by Mrs. Lou-Anne Boyde of the Ministry of Social Development, as activities to mark Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month continue.
Mrs. Boyde said that this country’s laws stipulate that any parent can be charged if found guilty of child abandonment. She said that statistics indicate that during the year 2012 there were 42 reported cases of child abandonment and this rose to 72 cases in 2013. She further noted that parents abandon their children for a variety of reasons.
